Design that begins with Understanding
At Unicus Architecture, we believe every space should reflect the people who use it.
Our work is rooted in understanding how our clients live, work, and experience their environments—so the final design feels intentional, personal, and lasting.
Our Philosophy
The name Unicus reflects our belief that no two projects—and no two clients—are the same.
Rather than applying a standard formula, we approach each project with curiosity and care, allowing the design to evolve from real needs, constraints, and goals.
How we Work
We work best with clients who value a thoughtful, collaborative process.
Whether residential or commercial, we aim to be involved early—so design decisions can guide the project, rather than being applied after the fact.
Jonathan A. Terrero, AIA, NCARB
Principal & Founder
Jonathan brings over a decade of experience across residential, commercial, and mixed-use design. His background spans both design and construction, giving him a comprehensive understanding of how projects evolve—from early concepts through execution.
His approach is grounded in thoughtful problem-solving, attention to detail, and a strong belief that good design should not only look right—but function seamlessly in everyday use.
While pursuing his architectural degree at NJIT, Jonathan participated in the 2013 Chinese Solar Decathlon as part of Team NJHA, serving as Project Manager during the construction phase. This experience provided early, hands-on exposure to the design and execution of a fully solar-powered home, reinforcing his interest in performance-driven design.
Following graduation, Jonathan gained experience working with architectural firms throughout New York and New Jersey, where he developed a strong foundation in design, construction documentation, and construction administration.
Jonathan served as a member of the Lincoln Park Planning Board for 10 years and is an active member of the Newark and Suburban Chapter of the AIA. He is also an adjunct professor at Kean University in the School of Public Architecture.
Based in Long Valley, New Jersey, Jonathan lives with his wife and two children and remains actively involved in the local community.
Outside of architecture, he enjoys traveling, staying active, and exploring creative outlets—including perfecting his craft as an amateur BBQ pitmaster.
