Why Design Comes Before Drawings

Thoughtful planning leads to better projects, fewer surprises, and stronger outcomes

Many projects begin with one simple request:
“We just need drawings.”

It sounds efficient, but in many cases, drawings are not the starting point — they are the result of a much larger process.

At Unicus Architecture, we believe the most successful projects begin with thoughtful planning. Before documentation comes design: understanding how the space should function, what challenges need to be solved, and how the project can best support the people using it.

Drawings document decisions. Design is what makes those decisions worth documenting.

When projects move too quickly into drawings without enough design development, important questions often remain unresolved:

  • How should the space flow?

  • What is the most efficient layout?

  • Are there structural or site constraints to address?

  • Have long-term needs been considered?

  • Is the project being shaped intentionally, or simply moved forward quickly?

These issues often surface later during construction, when changes become more costly and stressful.

What a thoughtful process helps avoid

A more intentional design process can help reduce:

  • costly revisions

  • delayed decisions

  • construction confusion

  • unclear priorities

  • missed opportunities in layout and function

It also leads to spaces that feel more resolved, more useful, and more aligned with the original goals of the project.

How we work

Our role goes beyond producing plans. We guide projects from early ideas through design development and documentation, helping clients make informed decisions at the right time.

We work best with clients who value:

  • early collaboration

  • thoughtful planning

  • clear communication

  • design that supports real life or real business needs

We may not be the right fit if…

To respect everyone’s time, it helps to be clear:

We are typically not the right fit for projects that are looking for:

  • drafting only

  • immediate permit sets without prior design work

  • rushed turnaround with minimal planning

  • the lowest-cost option above all else

We are a strong fit if…

We are often the right fit for clients who are:

  • planning a custom home, renovation, or addition

  • evaluating a commercial interior or fit-out

  • looking for guidance before construction begins

  • seeking a collaborative and design-driven approach

A better way to begin

If you are still exploring a project, a consultation can be a valuable first step. It provides an opportunity to discuss goals, identify constraints, and better understand the path forward before moving into full design and documentation.

If you’re looking for a thoughtful, well-planned process, we’d be glad to start the conversation.
